RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
